Back in 2006, when I first started this blog I heard about a female vocalist by the name of Jazmine Sullivan, who sang a version of a song called "Resentment" that many believed to be better than a version sung by Beyonce. I completely forgot about that girl until I was listening to the radio in DC recently and heard her new single "Need U Bad" which sounds strikingly like something the great Lauryn Hill would have produced.

Now I never saw the comparisons between Miss Hill and Amy Winehouse, but Sullivan sounds so much like Lauryn its scary. After finding Jazmine Sullivan was behind the music on the radio I found "Lions, Tigers and Bears" which is a soul wrenching track from the now 21-year-old, and will be featured on her first album Fearless to be released soon. This track too is reminiscent of the great sound that Lauryn Hill failed to reproduce later in her career, but luckily there's Jazmine to keep the music moving.

I used to laugh at this guy with all of his YouTube and MySpace self promoted hype but honestly when I started to learn his story I became a fan. Attended Harvard at 14 and graduated at 19, writing and producing his own music as well playing most of the instruments in his production. When I saw him pick up a trumpet and play some notes for the production of "Gibberish," I was sold. I'd bet that this production did not go down with Ryan Leslie in a blazer and shades all night, but this dude is talented... and that may be an understatement.

I first heard of Esperanza Spalding when I saw her listed on the line-up for The Roots Picnic, which was held this last Saturday in Philadelphia (see ?uestlove OkayPlayer introduction). I then saw her incredible performance of her first single "Precious," on my Late Show with David Letterman. Esperanza is a gifted bassist, vocalist and composer and her name means "hope" in Spanish. Her sound is in the similar to that of Norah Jones, but she pushes the envelope at the same time and her voice is of Corrine Bailey Rae, but stronger and more pure. I'm really becoming a fan of hers as I find more material by her on her MySpace. Also check out her interview on NPR's All Things Considered. Her self titled album, Esperanza, is in stores now.

"Spazz" on the other hand is BANANAS on the first listen and I'm probably looking forward to this album now more than any other. "Spazz" can be heard on the new Zune commercials, where you can get a glipse of the album cover for N.E.R.D.'s next album Seeing Sounds (not N.3.R.D., like previously thought). 9th Wonder, as most of y'all know, teaches a course in NCCU's Hip Hop Initiative and was blessed by a full Pro-Tools studio that is on campus in Durham. Out of that studio has been birthed M1-Platoon, a 5 man group of 19 year-olds from Washington D.C., who are all students at Central, Kooley High and Young Swift, a 17 year old from Durham, who's in a pre-college program at Central. 9th pulled out an old track he made while all were in the studio, and he tells the following:

I was like "ok...ima put 7 cats on this joint...everybody can try out.....but only 7 rappers can get on the jam....."

well...everybody scrambles for pen and paper...12 cats...all writing at the same time...reciting there rhyme...practicin' the flows...all that...

So...in the control room it sat me, my assistant Alleis(Softserve) and Picasso(resident beatmaker extraordinaire....

One by one, each rapper entered the booth, and lefted the booth 2 flame in their wake.....it got MORE and MORE impossible for me to CUT somebody...and at the end...I DIDN'T...

The crazy thing is...the age of these kids range from 17 to 22...with most of them being UNDER 20

so...I bring to yall B-BALL TRYOUTS...

Wow, I have a lot to say about the rest of the fest. and it isn't necessarily all good.

A day after the poor turnout for Jeru, Wale, and LB, I thought to myself "Last night was slow cause it was Thursday, people gotta get off work or get up early for work..., Friday it will be on!" On Friday local indie (non-backpack) acts did a "fashion forward" event featuring performances from Gripplyaz, Hollyweerd, B.o.B, and Proton with a runway filled with naked, painted chicks, wearing nothing but kicks to keep everyones attention. All of the acts are still up and coming so I wasn't really expecting any amazing sets but the different clothes, synthesizers, and unknown songs made for an overall boring scene for the crowd. Aside from B.o.B, I've been associated with these acts through DJing and have seen them all kill it in clubs with like minded kids, but they just weren't felt by the backpackers.

After some networking and waiting around for the Juice Crew, I found out the Big Daddy Kane was a no show. I really wanted to see Kane like everyone else so I wasn't really in a mood to stick around, but I caught the first 10 or so mins with Marley Marl, but the shit just wasn't the same without everyone there so I called it a night.

I showed up late this night becuase all I wanted to see was The Clipse/Re-Up and Three 6 Mafia.
After a couple of the opening acts I slid backstage, I started seeing the entourage's and then I saw Pusha T who gave me props on my new Bobby Fresh shirt. I'm no man fan but that put a lil pep in my step for the rest of the night. Also Ab-Liva is one of the tallest non b-ballers I've seen, 6'8 maybe??? The Clipse did their thing I really enjoyed their show, but I give props to Pusha who just had mad energy for a light crowd, so I really appreciated that. Three 6 ended up canceling, surprise surprise, but it was 2 am when the Clipse where warping things up and I still hadn't hit Amanda Diva's afterparty, so I got ghost!

I was very disappointed with the festival this year, I know they received a lot of money from sponsors, but I think they did a poor job booking the right artist for the rap nerd crowd. They didn't need Wale, Three 6, or even the Juice Crew. Evidence would of been a much better look than Wale. Murs would of been a much better look than Three 6. And a Goodie Mob reunion would of been a much better look (and easier) than the Juice Crew. Shit Joe Scudda was talking to fans all of Friday night, he should of been booked to do some of his solo music on stage.
A3c is still a very young festival, I think this was year 4 or 5, and still needs time to grow into a festival that the city looks forward to hosting and attending year after year, rather than a whole bunch of unrelated artist crammed into three days. It wasn't all bad, I met a lot of people, rubbed shoulders with some great artist, and saw LB!!! which was the best time I've had at a concert in a while, but A3C you need to be a total package, right now your like "a girl with a pretty face and no back" (c) ALC

AC3 Hip-Hop Festival: Day One

Day one is in the books! This is gonna be pretty quick cause I got to get to work. Was really a great night, I was able to get backstage with my boys DJ Singh, DJ Wreckineyez and the MC of night Kaos, and watched the first performer of night...Waleeee!!! It was pretty sad because people where still filing in and out so maybe only 150 people saw him perform with a live go-go band. The band was on point, but they didn't hit with the crowd, which was mostly white kids between 16 and 21. I felt like Rosenberg at that GZA concert (see Juan Eps). During Wale's show he went in and out of his songs and Go-Go classics that the crowd didn't know. I enjoyed it but a lot of people where confused. I missed Jeru's performance, had a little networking to do, but I did met a really cool dude, Supastition, whos performing Friday night with my boy Wreck on the turntables.

While I was backstage after Jeru's set, I saw a pack of big dude's and Joe Scudda roll in by me so I knew it was about to be on! Phonte seemed to be a little under the weather when he passed but you would of never of guessed it with his performance. I went out into the crowd to catch LB for the first time since '06. I had the best time watching them do their thing, they are indeed the best rap group I've seen live. From DJ Flash in the back switchin it up to D-Brock doing double duties as singer/hype man. It was great seeing all of the Getback material live. When"That Ain't Love" came on IT WAS A WRAP FOR ME!!!!

This is, without a doubt, my favorite "radio show" out there. Don't know if it really classifies as one, because they don't play much music, but the talk is hilarious and the contrasting styles of Ciph and Rosenberg really give you the whole picture when it comes to hip hop and all of that which surrounds it or has anything to do with it. Cipha Sounds is among other things the host of MTV's Sucker Free as well as a legend on Hot 97. Peter Rosenberg is relatively new to Hot 97, but he became one of my favorite personalities over last summer just because he is so honest and makes you excited about the music. Juan Epstein is the combination of the two men as they literally talk for over an hour and post the product on Rosenberg Radio. Okay, I've ignored these cats long enough. Kooley High is comprised of emcees Tab-One, Charlie Smarts and Rapsody and producers Foolery and Sinopsis. They got together while attending North Carolina State University and have been slowly making a name for themselves. Tab-One and Charlie Smarts are apart of half of the four-person group Inflowential and Rapsody has done several solo joints, but together they are a collection of hip-hop heads who are makin heads nod nationwide. I was really impressed when I saw the quintet on Hood Hype and started listening to their MySpace playlist. They've got the complete support of 9th Wonder, who has laced several of their tracks with his gifts and their lyrical content is refreshing. Check out the 9th produced "How 2 Make A Hit" which is on the new M1 Platoon (bio of them coming soon) mixtape.

Only had heard a few tracks from this mixtape, but honestly, it's the hottest album remix I've heard of American Gangster so far. DJ Skee's American Godfather just didn't do it for me. Props to Phil fer de heads up on the full mixtape.
